My Personal Experience with GeM – Registration & Initial Hurdles

I recently registered my business on GeM, excited about the opportunity to sell to government buyers. The registration process was smooth—I submitted my PAN, GST, and bank details, and my account was approved within a week.

However, after registration, I faced challenges:

  1. Unclear Product Listing Process – Uploading products with correct specifications was confusing.
  2. Bidding & Tender Complexity – Understanding how to participate in bids was not intuitive.
  3. Lack of Beginner Guidance – The portal lacks detailed tutorials for new sellers.
  4. High Competition – Established sellers dominate listings, making it tough for small businesses.

How to Register on GeM Online (Step-by-Step Guide)

For those new to GeM, here’s how to register:

Step 1: Visit the Official GeM Portal

Go to https://gem.gov.in and click “Sign Up”.

Step 2: Choose User Type

Select “Seller” for business registration.

Step 3: Enter Business Details

  • PAN Number
  • Business Name & Address
  • GSTIN (if applicable)
  • Aadhaar-linked Mobile Number (for OTP verification)

Step 4: Upload Required Documents

  • PAN Card
  • GST Certificate (mandatory for some categories)
  • Cancelled Cheque/Bank Details
  • MSME Certificate (optional but beneficial)

Step 5: Submit & Wait for Verification

Once approved, you’ll receive login credentials via email.
